Title: Winter Song
Author: William Shakespeare
Illustrator: Melanie Hall
Copyright date: 2006
Publisher: Wordsong
Summary: This book features a poem about winter. The poem is broken up into stanzas, a little bit of the poem shown on each page with beautiful illustrations. There are many different words about winter featured in the poem, and at the back of the book a glossary defines all of these terms.
Perfect student: This book is great as an introduction to poetry. It eases readers in to the idea of reading poetry, how it sounds, and how it can be paired with pictures. This book would also be great for students who like winter.
Common Core State Standard: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.4.5 Explain major differences between poems, drama, and prose, and refer to the structural elements of poems (e.g., verse, rhythm, meter) and drama (e.g., casts of characters, settings, descriptions, dialogue, stage directions) when writing or speaking about a text.
This book works well with this standard because, as a great introduction to poetry, it can be used to highlight the different type of language used in poetry.
