Summary: This is the story of two young children who get lost in the hills as they are playing. They spend the night in the wilderness, but in the morning, a wolf helps them to find their way home. The people of the village thank the wolf and give him many gifts for helping the children. The story also explains why wolves cannot be heard howling in the night anymore, and warn that they will not return until humans care for them again as they used to.

Common Core State Standard: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.2.2 Recount stories, including fables and folktales from diverse cultures, and determine their central message, lesson, or moral. This book works well with this standard because it is a folktale. It could be used by students to study the characteristics of folktales, would be easily understood, and has clear messages that students could recount.
