Summary: This is the picture book version of the poem written to mark the occasion of the President Barack Obama being sworn in for his second term. The poem was read during the inaguration. The poem celebrates America fron one side to the other and from morning to night, featuring all of the venerable actions that take place in the country and everything that makes America great. It is a very patriotic poem.
Media for illustration: Acrylics and India ink
Perfect student: The illustrations in this book would appeal to all ages, even young readers. However, the poetry of the book is more complex, which would target late-elementary school students. This book would be perfect for students learning about US history or patriotism. It could also be used in a high school government or English class as it is a great format to study the poem alongside the illustrations
Common Core State Standard: ELA-LITERACY.RL.4.5 Explain major differences between poems, drama, and prose, and refer to the structural elements of poems (e.g., verse, rhythm, meter) and drama (e.g., casts of characters, settings, descriptions, dialogue, stage directions) when writing or speaking about a text.
This book works well with this standard because, as a great introduction to poetry, it can be used to highlight the different type of language used in poetry.
