Perfect student: This book is great for young readers who are just beginning to learn about poetry. It includes quotes from many famous poems, which would help young readers understand the foregrounding of language that sets poetry apart from other forms of literature.
Common Core State Standard: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.4.5 Explain major differences between poems, drama, and prose, and refer to the structural elements of poems (e.g., verse, rhythm, meter) and drama (e.g., casts of characters, settings, descriptions, dialogue, stage directions) when writing or speaking about a text.
This book works well with this standard because, as a great introduction to poetry, it can be used to highlight the different type of language used in poetry.
