Author: Celeste Mannis
Illustrator: Susan Kathleen Hartung
Copyright date: 2005
Publisher: Puffin Books
Summary: This book is a counting book. It tells the story of a litle girl walking through a Japanese garden, counting things she sees as she goes. Her story is told in the form of haikus that emphasize the beauty of nature while reinforcing the act of counting as well.
Media for illustration: Oil on paper
Perfect student: This book is perfect for young readers. It is a counting book, so it could even be used for preschool children. The illustrations are full 2-page spreads that go alongside the counting haikus. Even though this is a counting book, the haikus can be appreciated by students of any age.
Common Core State Standard: ELA-LITERACY.RL.4.5 Explain major differences between poems, drama, and prose, and refer to the structural elements of poems (e.g., verse, rhythm, meter) and drama (e.g., casts of characters, settings, descriptions, dialogue, stage directions) when writing or speaking about a text.
This book works well with this standard because, as a great introduction to poetry, it can be used to highlight the different type of language used in poetry.
