Summary: This is a story about a young bird considering trying his wings for the first time. He questions what might happen, both the good and the bad things. In the end, he realizes that if he never tries, he will never know if he can fly.
Media for illustration: Watercolor painting with linoleum block painting done through collage
Perfect student: This book is perfect for young readers. It needs a little vocabulary scaffolding, but can encourage young students to be themselves and to take risks to try something new.
Common Core State Standard: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.4.5 Explain major differences between poems, drama, and prose, and refer to the structural elements of poems (e.g., verse, rhythm, meter) and drama (e.g., casts of characters, settings, descriptions, dialogue, stage directions) when writing or speaking about a text. This book works well with this standard because, as a great introduction to poetry, it can be used to highlight the different type of language used in poetry.
